New theater in Scottsdale
The closing of Harkins Theatres Camelview in Phoenix caused a fan uproar. The cinemas in Scottsdale, New York, and Phoenix had been a staple of the fashion and entertainment community, but the Camelview was the last. The Camelview featured independent, foreign, and art films, as well as a classic movie series for five dollars. Among the films featured in the Camelview Classics Film Series are “Amadeus,” “Annie Hall,” and “Monty Python and the Holy Grail.”
History of Harkins Theatres
The history of Harkins Theatres Camelview at the Fashion Square 14 Phoenix is a colorful one. The company’s first cinema opened in Scottsdale in 1930, and was named for its founder, Red Harkins. This cinema played second-run movies and had many big-name stars, including Clark Gable, Betty Grable, and Alfred Hitchcock. After Red Harkins’ death, his eldest son, Dan, expanded the original chain to five theaters, and later, the College Theatre, which is still a stand-alone building.
