Oral Health and General Well-being

July 23, 2019by Smile Esthetics

In dentistry, your smile is the window to your overall health. That is why it is imperative to brush your teeth twice daily with toothpaste and floss each night before bed as well as visiting our practice for regular professional teeth cleanings. You can develop the periodontal disease if you do not take these necessary steps to remove plaque from your teeth and gums. Periodontal disease has a serious impact on your overall well-being.

Diabetes

There is a link between gum disease and diabetes. Diabetics are more likely to develop periodontal disease. Individuals who suffer from diabetes have a suppressed immune system that makes them more prone to infection. If your diabetes symptoms are not under control, you are at a higher risk for developing periodontal disease and facing more serious side effects. Periodontal disease can lead to missing teeth and red, bleeding gums. Always inform your dentist of any health changes, such as diabetes.

Heart Disease

Periodontal disease is also linked to heart disease. While the exact link has not been determined yet, it is well known that periodontal disease increases your risk of having heart disease. The inflammation caused by periodontal disease could be the cause of heart conditions. Additionally, individuals who have been diagnosed with periodontal disease may face more serious side effects from their existing heart disease.

Other Issues

When your oral health deteriorates due to periodontal disease, you also face a higher risk of developing several other major health conditions. Periodontal disease may be a risk factor for stroke, as people who suffer from gum disease have been proven to be more likely to suffer a stroke later on. Periodontal disease is also linked to respiratory illness, osteoporosis, and cancer. Individuals with gum disease are more likely to also have these conditions.
